A Movie and a Life Lesson

A couple of weekends ago, Netfilx sent us We Are Marshall. I have been wanting to see it for some time. From all the previews on TV, it looked like it would be very good. Sad, but very good. For those of you who haven't heard of the movie, it is about a tragic plane crash that took the lives of most of the Marshall University Football team. There were fans, coaching staff, and the team on the plane. It showed the struggle of the family, friends, and town during the time right after the crash. The school decided to go ahead and play football to honor those who were lost. The rest of the movie goes on to show the struggle of the team, coaches, and the town dealing with starting the team back up.

All this said, when the movie came out, my husband thought that it was about his university, Wichita State. It said on the previews that it was based on true events, and he thought that they had made up a school and used the story of the Wichita State Football team. You see in the same year there was a crash with this team too. There were more than one plane so not everyone was lost, but a tragedy none the less. I did a little Google search and found two different stories. One about Marshall University and one about Wichita State University. As you can see from the articles, these crashes happened within about a month of each other.

I really loved this movie. I was shown once again by example about how to deal with things with grace, dignity, and to never give up. It is inspiring to know that a University, a Town, and Families can come back from something so horrible and do it the way they did. Did they struggle? Heck YES they did! Who wouldn't? Did they think they wouldn't be able to get through it? Again a big YES. However, in the end you see that they do. They talk about where some of the people from the movie are today and what they have done. It is amazing to see how they came up from a place so low and still went on to do such great things.

My prayer for all of you as you read this is to know that if they can do it, you can to. If you are at a place that you don't think you can get past, you can. It will take time, love, crying, a swift kick, and a whole lot more, but you can and will come out on the other side, and you will be that much stronger when you do. It's not something that is overnight, but it does happen if you want it to. I hope if you haven't seen the movie that you do. Even if you don't like the movie, the message is great.

Good movie, but to disappoint Aaron, it really is about Marshall. My mom works with a guy whose parents were both killed in the crash and he and his brother were raised by their aunt and uncle. He (along with other family members) were flown to Hollywood by the production company to see the premiere.

He realized that before we saw the movie. He just found it very hard to believe that there were two crashes the same year and with two football teams.
